Understanding the Nature of my Work

Beyond a list of credentials reflecting my educational endeavors & knowing what to expect in a treatment session, I feel it is important to share a bit about why I do the work I do so that others can better understand how my approach to bodywork has developed over the years through a process of blending the art of intuitive touch with biological science.  

The most common phrase I hear from people in my practice is: "It's hell getting old."  While it is inevitable for the body to change with age and overuse, there are pro-active measures accessible to everyone that can limit and sometimes eliminate the pain we feel we are destined to experience as time goes by.  I try to educate people that pain can be experienced at any stage in life and is more likely precipitated by habitual movement patterns, structural anomalies, injuries, and genetics, just to name a few. 

My own experience with chronic pain (exceeding 20 years of my life now) is what drives my continued research & education in not only helping others, but myself as well.  I often joke about feeling 'blessed' to have been inundated with various physical traumas, poor postural & repetitive strain patterns, and sports related injuries as a means of being 'good at my job' or at the very least being able to relate to the discomfort you are feeling.  My experiences have allowed me to better understand the effects of pain on the human body, not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well, leading me to believe that healing requires a more holistic approach (mind, body, & spirit). 

Over the years, I have learned to differentiate the variances between joint, muscle, fascial and nerve pains, while my education has taught me that healling ultimately takes place at the neurological level.  This is accomplished by utilizing properly applied sensory stimuli along with controlled movement in order to affect different receptors found in the human systems.  In plain terms, there is a 'method to my madness' as I apply soft tissue techniques to diminish pain levels; it is all dependent on how the pain is presenting at the time and where the adhesiveness is felt.  Working on the main portion of a muscle (muscle belly) requires it's own sort of applied pressure and manual maneuver, as is true when addressing the tendons, ligaments, arteries, the lymphatic system, fascial adhesions, nerve manipulations, and joint releases, meaning each system requires a different touch.  Sometimes the lightest of pressure is applied, while other times a deeper touch is required while moving the joint simultaneously.  Other times it is about tractioning or distracting or flossing & gliding which requires a distinct pulling or pin & stretch technique.  Mostly with injury, several structures are related to the pain one experiences, the key is to break the 'pain cycle' that is being communicated to the brain which is accomplished with the use of any or all techniques noted above.  The most important part of the session is communication between therapist and client, keeping in constant check on the sensations felt.  While some discomfort might be common when working with injury, nothing should be illiciting stabbing sensations or additional pain for the client. 

Typically, there will be several structures to affect over a period of time.  Most people will not get the 100% healing they are seeking after only one session; the body takes time to coerce in returning to it's truest state, as it is such an adaptable machine and we are attempting to influence it out of a state to which it has become accustomed.  A measurable piece of data for knowing if the treatment is having a positive effect is that you will feel at least 10-30% better after the applied mechanics of one session.  I instruct all clients to give the body a time frame of 48-72 hours to fully integrate the work we have done and report back so we know the proper direction to proceed with therapy.  The body mostly requires rest for this process which means limiting or re-assessing activities and postural habits that may be keeping the area aggravated.

I feel blessed to reside in a community where we have access to an abundance of complementary care practitioners, so while my truest intention is to offer you the healing your body requires, I do recognize my limits and am also aware that the modality of care a person requires is quite dependent on the stage of the healing process in the moment..   Experience has given me a vast knowledge & understanding of additional forms of care that may prove to be worthwhile in your healing process; I may only be able to offer a small piece of the puzzle for you.  Maintaining a broad referral base for various highly skilled & educated professionals in the area has proven to be an invaluable resource to have at my disposal and I gladly educate and share these options with you.
